Residents and visitors were sad to see several mature elm trees removed from Grand Marais last fall to make way for the upcoming Highway 61 corridor road improvements through town. Set to begin this year, the project is a total redesign of the roadway with turn lanes and parking, plus new pedestrian and bicycle friendly features. The trees unfortunately had to go.

However, in considerate Cook County community fashion, the wood from these trees is not to be wasted. Creative ideas proposed for use include benches and tables, bowls, and small keepsakes.

The Creative Economy Collaborative, an advisory council to the Grand Marais City Council, is seeking letters of intent. Roughly 5 to 6 cords of wood are available. If you have an idea for a creative use of the wood from these trees, you can submit it using this form:
